Takeaways:
Dear colleagues,
Our bargaining committee continues to make progress towards an agreement on a full contract with the administration. Once they reach a tentative agreement, this document will go up for a vote by all Union members. It is important to note that being included in the bargaining unit does not automatically make you a member of our Union. The contract will apply to everyone in the bargaining unit, but only Union members who have signed membership cards will be able to vote on our contract.
The membership card is different from the authorization card you may have signed when we were forming our Union. If you have not signed a card within the last two months, you are not a member of our Union yet.
Once our bargaining committee and the administration reach a tentative agreement, there will likely be a short window during which members can vote on whether or not they want to ratify the contract. We will want to lock in the transparency, protections, and benefits of this contract as soon as possible. Therefore, it is best to sign a membership card now in order to make sure you have time to evaluate and vote on the tentative agreement when it is ready. Union members will not start paying dues until we have a contract, so there is no downside to signing up early. Hundreds of faculty members have already done so!
We will have opportunities throughout the summer for you to learn more about membership and sign a card at the Oakland campus. If you are a faculty member at a regional campus, or if it is difficult for you to get to Oakland, you can request a conversation and someone will come to you.
Here is where we will have a membership card table set up this week:
Wednesday, May 24- 2-6 PM Posvar Lobby
Thursday, May 25- 10 AM-2 PM Benedum Patio
We look forward to meeting you, answering your questions, and welcoming you into our Union!
If you have already signed a card and you know of faculty colleagues who are also interested in this opportunity, let us know ([email protected]). We would be happy to reach out to them.
