COMMUNICATION & ACTION TEAM (CAT) UPDATE
April 3, 2023
It’s time to sign your membership card!
Takeaway:
Dear colleagues,
As demonstrated by the bargaining status table created by our bargaining committee, we are moving towards a tentative agreement on our full contract. Once the bargaining committee and the administration reach this tentative agreement, all union members will be given the opportunity to vote on it. The contract will only go into effect if a majority of votes favor ratifying it. We want to make sure that every bargaining unit faculty member has adequate time to learn about membership and sign up to become a member of our union.
Throughout April, we will have several opportunities for you to stop by a table on the Oakland campus to ask questions about membership and sign a membership card.
Here is where we will be this week:
Wednesday, April 5- 10 AM-1 PM Posvar Lobby
Thursday, April 6- 11 AM-2 PM outside Clapp Hall (Fifth Ave.)
If you are at a regional campus, or if you would prefer, you can reach out to a CAT member in your area to request a conversation and a card or complete this form and someone will be in touch with you. Membership cards are paper and must be signed in person.
Why become a member of our union? As our current Chancellor, soon to be faculty colleague, said in an interview with the Pitt News, “That’s how you have a voice.” Only members will be able to vote on our contract, elect union representatives, participate in a strike vote (if there were one), and decide how to spend our dues money. Members will start paying dues only after we ratify our first contract. Dues are 1.5% of total earnings from Pitt. Dues are our collective financial power and they are necessary for our union to function.
We would love to have your help with this effort. Do you know two or three faculty members you could ask to sign a card? Join our team to learn how to collect membership cards in your area.
We are sure that you have questions and we are happy to answer them. Stop by a table or reach out to a CAT member to ask questions, get answers, and sign a card!
In Solidarity,
Your Communication and Action Team (CAT)
