Eligibility for cost-of-living increases for bargaining unit faculty
The cost-of-living increase for 2022–23 applies to all “eligible” faculty in the bargaining unit, which now includes part-time faculty on single-term appointments.
The eligibility criteria below describe the administration’s existing policies and practices. The only substantive difference from previous years is that part-time faculty are now also eligible for the adjustment. So if you normally receive the annual increase, you should be eligible again this year, and in most cases if you are not eligible you will already know your salary for this year.
Eligible faculty include all tenured, tenure-stream, and non-tenure-stream full-time faculty, as well as all part-time tenured, part-time tenure stream, and part-time appointment stream faculty, including part-time faculty on single-term appointments (for example, faculty hired to teach one course at a time and rehired each semester).
Possible limitations on eligibility are as follows:
Requests for review of eligibility decisions:
If you think you should receive the cost-of-living increase but do not, you should submit a Request for Review to the Provost’s office at [email protected] within 14 days of receiving the erroneous paycheck, explaining why you believe you were mistakenly excluded. They will respond to you within 14 days. You can copy your Council representative when you submit that request. If you receive an unsatisfactory response, the union will work with you to determine your eligibility and seek further solutions.

Possible limitations on eligibility are as follows:
- Faculty (except part-time faculty on one-term appointments) who received salary increases after September 1, 2021 may not be eligible to receive this additional increase. An example would be a faculty member who received a retention offer in the spring, and would already have negotiated this year’s salary through that process. Part-time faculty on one-term appointments who received an increase of more than 3.25% after September 1, 2021, are not eligible to receive this increase. The previous adjustment represents their increase for FY 2023.
- Faculty (except part-time faculty on one-term appointments) who were hired after January 1, 2022 are not eligible to receive this additional increase. Their FY 2023 salary was determined at hire. Part-time faculty on one-term appointments who were appointed during at least one term in the 2021-22* year (fall, spring, or summer) are eligible for this increase.
- Faculty whose salaries are paid through alternative funding sources are not eligible for this increase, but these faculty are eligible for the increases built into their funding, as in previous years.
- Faculty on leaves of absence are eligible to receive the increase, but it will not be processed until they return from leave.
- Faculty who arranged an overall reduction in effort and a corresponding lower salary are eligible for a raise that would be applied to the new lower base salary.
- Faculty who are subject to the annual review process but declined to participate will not be considered to have the requisite satisfactory performance for the year and accordingly are not eligible to receive the increase.
- Faculty who do not receive a “satisfactory” evaluation in their annual review may not receive the cost-of-living increase. “Satisfactory performance” is defined in the university’s Salary Increase Policy.
